Stripey Darting Fish

Today I wanted to figure out the layout of the fish so I can figure out how many more I need. Unlike the fish I made last year, each of the stripey fish take longer to make. The first order of business was to make a shark fish to chase the owls off the design wall.

I finished four more blue fish.

This is this week's catch of blue fish.

I had already decided that I wanted the fish to switch directions in each row to form a zig zag pattern, but I still hadn't figured out the color layout. Here I tried a bit of a diagonal layout for the colors, hoping that this way I could get around having so few yellow and pink fish. But this doesn't really work given the overall pattern.

This vertical column layout makes a lot more sense, but I will  have to make a lot more fish. I think I need a separate column of yellow and orange fish. Also a separate column of the black fish. I had a lot of green fish left over if the green fish only gets one column.

Now I suggest you  go see how others are progressing from blocks to quilts in this last month of Rainbow Scrappy Challenge 2015.

  2. Oh, I like the top photo with the mixed colors! They look great, and no fish are left out. The fish are great!

  3. I agree with Mari. The layout of the first has a flowing of the colors, as if they are swimming in the water and looks complete. Each fish is cleverly done and interesting.

  4. Super - they really do look as if they're swimming along, I think the fact that you have trip pieced the fish enhances the effect - they're pretty streamlined!

  5. I like all of your fish. The vertical layout looks nice. Have you though of mixing them all up? I know that would kinda take away the rainbow look though.

  6. I actually like the gap, maybe space them out to give them room to 'swim'!

  8. Good call on the shark fish - those owls are a shifty lot.
I like the first layout, too. But my head is full of piglets, so I'm not a good judge of fish...

  11. Great layout. I love it. The shark fish was a good idea. Owls...they're so rude.

  13. That zigzag layout sure makes it look like they are swimming. And why doesn't the diagonal layout for the colors work???
