It's almost hummingbird season. They start to arrive here mid-April. My brother suggested I make a hummingbird block and I got it into my head to make it as an Alternative Universe Dear Jane block. This means the block finishes at 4.5 inches square. So yes, I resorted to paper piecing and the kittens learned quite a few new words today. I will probably remake a larger version that I can construct using my usual flip triangle technique.
Here are a few other Alternative Universe blocks. These are the blocks that Jane Stickle made but didn't put in her final quilt. Like the Dear Jane quilt, I'm making them using the Kaffe Fasset fabrics with his chalk spot for the background.
Here's a hummingbird quilt (8.5 by 11 inches) that I made back in 2011 using fused raw edge applique.
And this is an all girl hummingbird party. I usually have about five feeders and some of the more aggressive males will stake out a feeder for themselves forcing others to share and take turns.
Love your new hummingbird block, super cute!
ReplyDeleteYour hummingbird quilt is sweet. WOW. I have never seen that many hummingbirds in one place. They don't come to my feeder like that! But they do love my trumpet vine (darned weed).
ReplyDeleteI love watching the little flitters. Love your quilty ones, too!
ReplyDelete(But my favorite of the alternate universe blocks is still that goldfish...)
All your photos are fantastic! I love the hummers. Here in Louisiana we are in the flyway so we get to see a lot of them. Now that my Whitney Kitty is gone, they are coming back. she would catch them in mid flight
ReplyDeleteI tried piecing four 3 inch hearts the other day. I ended up tossing them. I had a migraine and kept doing stupid things. I ended up with a funky set of stars....
I don't have any hummingbirds yet! Is that photo from this week?
ReplyDeleteCute block, so nice to see these amazing little birds, we dont have them where I live. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the hummingbird. We can never get more than one at a time at our feeders (we have two out of view of one another). One bird will always stake out a feeder and attack anyone who comes near.
ReplyDeleteWish we had hummingbirds in our garden! Love your fabric bird, can't believe this is only 4.5"!!!!
