I'm back to the Rainbow Scrappy Challenge! And today's task seemed easy enough. I figured I would lay the seahorses out on the design wall and see if I had enough of each color or if a color was missing. I think it would be nice to have some true blue seahorses and maybe some of the fuschia or magenta variety. I also experimented with layout. In this case, seahorses touching noses are directly above seahorses that are back to back.
Here's a revised layout where seahorses in each column are facing in the same direction.
And here's Molly's suggestion for a layout.
I also realized that I have to remake some of the seahorses. I revised the pattern midstream, so the earlier seahorses have square tail tips and bulbous noses. If you want to see what others are pulling together, visit the Rainbow Scrappy Challenge.
I also made a couple more arches for the pickle dish quilt. And yes, these are paper pieced.
I am using the pattern out of Kaffe Fassett's Quilt Romance. I trace the arc onto deli wrap paper. In some cases, Molly takes the arc and runs off with it. I then get it back before (or after) she tears a hole in it. Then I sew small strips of fabric across the arc, trimming away as usual for paper piecing.
I think BOTH of the layouts look good. I also don't see the need to remake any of the seahorses! The fact that some have bigger noses and square tails wouldn't bother me.
ReplyDeleteYour have a gloriously beautiful collection of seahorses! I agree that I wouldn't change any of them, they look great together even with their differences.
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't that what we are all about ???? -- differences -- I love your seahorses
ReplyDeletePickle Dish looks fun. Please don't suggest any more great projects for me to do.
ReplyDeleteWow! All those pp seahorses are pretty impressive!
ReplyDeleteI would leave the seahorses just the way they are. No reason they can't be individuals. I like the first layout, more interesting, and I knew Molly would have her own interpretation. Love the pickle dishes.
ReplyDeleteYour seahorses are so much fun! I hope it isn't too much work to rip out the stitching you've already done and change out a few noses and tails. That would not be fun! But that is going to be a wonderful quilt!
ReplyDeleteYour seahorses are going to be SO amazing!!! I love the "natural" look of the first layout, but don't tell Molly! I'd hate to have that little miss mad at me!
ReplyDeleteI am not so keen on Mollys lay out, but definatly a good way to get a random mix of colours! The top layout was lovely. I think it is nice to see the different style of sea horses (ie original pattern) as there are many varieties in the sea. Such a fun quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like the first layout and the variable seahorses. But please don't tell Molly I said that. She's been so kind to me and I would hate to hurt her feelings.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to love seeing your pickle dishes! I've gone so far as to print off a pattern to trace, but I've managed not to succumb to block-making yet. (Yet may be the key word in that sentence...)
The whole seahorse family is so fun. Like any family there are variations, especially in noses, so I say leave them alone to be themselves. The pickle dish is so lovely, especially against that background. Excellent choices there.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to get Molly to tell you how, exactly, to assemble the layout she has suggested. Then tell her it's beyond your mere human abilities. ;- )
ReplyDeleteOh....before the flood I bought that book specifically for the pickles! It was going to be my "big" quilt of 2017........sigh..
ReplyDeleteI think Molly needs to take a class on putting the quilt together - that looks like a very difficult assembly. If you do find the class..... I have 2 cats that need to attend it as well. Love the first picture of them.
ReplyDeleteYour seahorses are amazing Sally and I intend to make a few next year!
