Green Gardens

Here are my green diamond blocks. And the stars must be aligned today because I may have finished in time to post my contribution to the Rainbow Scrappy Challenge for 2021.

And since the microspools (finished size is 1.5 inches) is a never-ending project, another handful came along for the ride.

Meanwhile, spring is fast approaching here in Portland and I should already have my snow peas planted. Instead, I have been working in the backyard. As you can see, it had a very old timey look and desperately needed an updated look that reflects the times.

So this is what my backyard looks like now. My neighbor's oak was obviously jealous of the dogwood and got a bit carried away.

And now the oak has been literally carried away. A woodworker stopped by and asked if he could have the oak...so now it has gone to live its life as furniture where it can be jealous of a bowl of fruit instead.

  1. Oh my, I hope that marauding oak tree didn't damage your house. So sad the beautiful pink dogwood was a victim.

  3. I've never tried chaos theory gardening although Mother Nature has tried it around here a few times too. I prefer the old timey look. Glad you did find some time to make some chips and spools and hope March is a better month for you and yours.

  4. Those microspools are just way too adorable! I'm trying to wrap my head around the finished size of 1.5 inches. Yikes!

  5. I'm shocked at the Spring growth happening in your area. Beautiful, but surprising. Sorry about the mess that jealous tree left behind. Hoping it likes fruit! LOL

  6. Love the mini spools! Too bad to lose trees, but thankful not on the house. I love seeing Spring happening from the opposite coast - it's heading our way then.

  7. Are you sure that tree is an oak? From the cross section of the trunk, it looks like black walnut to me. Did Molly and Buddy enjoyed the show when the woodworker carted it away?

  8. OMG, I hope they cleaned up the mess after the tree was carted away! Or is that your new spring exercise program? Just think of how many wooden spools that tree would’ve made! I know you had a branch land on your house, and I see a tarp on your roof. Hopefully that damage was minimal and can now be quickly repaired. I’m so glad to see that you’re sewing again. Are you up for talking on the phone? xo

  9. Your garden looks lovely with all the flowers! We're still quite chilled out here in Virginia, but I do see some spring bulbs coming up. Nothing flowering yet.

  10. I guess you should have been more explicit in explaining that all the flowery spring action was not a current picture of your backyard. As much as there are days when I'd like to tear out my entire landscaping, the thought of starting over (and the cost) is overwhelming. And sadly, by the time the clean-up is done you'll probably be past spring planting season in your area. Of course, that means you'll be able to study how the missing tree(s) affect sunlight and shade in your newly exposed landscape. I think I'd stay inside and just sew.

  11. I'm seeing unhappy pine tree fronds in there too. We had a jealous tree at our first house but it aimed away from the neighbor's garage and only upset the chainlink fence. And yes, a few neighboring flowers were harmed in the making of that story.I love your green diamonds. Such a nice contrast with the black & white!

  12. Looks like that oak was the neighborhood bully... Good riddance to him!
Love to see those microspools come out to play!

  13. The blossoms are amazing. We are pretty far away from that. Love the green diamonds and backgrounds as well as the scrappy spools. Both look fun.

  14. So, you get to re-design your yard now, remove all signs of the chaos of the last few... and plant something nice in its place. Um, did the Dogwood get sacrificed in the process? If so, I am so sorry!

  15. I love your sense of humour. I'm glad some of the offending tree will be turned into furniture, but I'm sorry some of the beautiful "old timey" look of your garden was its victim.
