I'm back! Except I didn't go anywhere. I've just been plugging away on the Placid Curves quilt top from Amy Ellis' Modern Neutrals book. Having lived through the 80s, I have had enough neutrals to last a lifetime. (Except oddly enough my cat is buff and white.) So instead I thought I'd go with a Quilt of Valor (QOV) interpretation which I think worked out well with the stars and stripes banner effect.

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Postage Stamp Charm Quilt

How's this for scrappy? It started as a joke: a postage stamp charm quilt where the quilt is composed of one inch finished squares each from different fabric. But then I couldn't get it out of my mind, then I started collecting 1.5 inch strips from my stash, and slowly the obsession grew. The finished quilt is 64X72 inches.

Every now and then I would take the 1.5 inch strips I collected and sew them into pairs and then quartets.

Next I trimmed the quartets into 1.5 inch sections, then sewed four of these together to get a patch with 16 squares.

This is a close-up of the quilt. Because I built this from strips and patches, there isn't an overall design for this quilt. However, as I went along, I did try to capture characters, flowers and interesting bits of each fabric.

This is an even closer view.

And now if you would like to enjoy more quilts, here's the link to the 2013 Fall Blogger's Quilt Festival.

How could I resist? This is the 3X3 quilt section turned into a kaleidoscope pattern.

Monday, October 21, 2013

I thought I would show the work in progress. The pattern is Placid Curves from Amy Ellis's book Modern Neutrals. The pattern's fake curves reminded me of old-time blue and white quilts and that made me think of a Quilt of Valor decked out with stars and stripes. This section is only 3X3 blocks, and the curves will become more obvious as it gets bigger.

I have been sewing so much lately that I haven't been putting in much time with pattern design. So I am pulling out this silkscreen print (on paper) from about a year ago. But it is fitting. Tomorrow will be the 17th anniversary of adopting my cats Tommy and Jimmy, and also the anniversary of Jimmy's passing two years ago.  (Or as Tommy see its, the second anniversary of Tommy 24/7!)

I understand. Sometimes we get confused and visit this blog instead of that one. But more to the point you should be visiting my blog at tripodtommy.tumblr.com/ so your life won't be full of regret.

You're welcome!

Earlier this year I posted this painting of Jimmy (acrylic on canvas, 24X20 inches). I'm thinking I should try this in fabric. But maybe I'll come to my senses.

I started with the image from yesterday and started making a kaleidoscope pattern. And somehow I came up with something that looks like crochet. Hmmm...fascinating!

When I made the first fractured quilt as part of Vicki W.'s quilt-a-long, I may have cut too many blocks. I thought I would make the Red Centre quilt with the remaining pieces but liked this layout better. Plus, when I was putting it together, my brain cells took a nice long nap.

We had a storm blow through this morning. Happily, I took a chainsaw with me on the trip to the dentist because I needed it to clear a tree out of the way. More happily, no chainsaws, drills or other power equipment were required in the dentist's office.

Staff is taking the evening off so she will be well rested for the Cat Toy Expo tomorrow. I have given permission for staff to attend this function because the cat toy to fabric ratio is pathetic. In the meantime, you can visit a sophisticated blog at TripodTommy.tumblr.com.
