Here's the first assembled string star. This is quite subdued for me. But that was kind of the point because I was finding myself using all the bright strings for another quilt. And as a reminder, you can find the inspiration for this quilt in the Pat Nickols collection at the Mingei International Museum.
I must have made a miscalculation along the way because this star is about 20 inches square. Much bigger than I had planned. But that's all right. This is all fun sewing. Especially because I decided to construct it like a Kaleidoscope and avoid setting in squares. That is, I sewed two light right triangles to the outside of each diamond before sewing all the diamonds together. As the last step, I added the rust outer corners.
And you can find more Scraptastic Tuesday inspiration here.
Molly and Buddy did not find any of this interesting. But now you can see how easy it is to miscalculate given the cuteness overload in the sewing room.

Crivens! That's a big star!
(And you'd think I'd be able to come up with something funny revolving around 'big star', but I'm coming up empty...)
That's some serious cute you've got going on in that pile of kitties!
Subdued? I think it's beautiful! It reminds me of a kaleidoscope tube that has all those colors and shapes at the end. I love sewing projects like this that are fun and use up scraps too!
Where does one car end and the ther begin? Great scrappy star and with a bigger block the quilt is finished quicker right? Thanks for joining up with us at #scraptasictueday
I don’t know how people live without a daily dose of kitten cuteness. And I love the string star! I would never have attempted one until you described adding the right triangles first. Even better, I see it and understand it, which makes it do-able. It seems I’m still at the stage where everything is a first.....
Thanks for the hint, I have a bunch of string pieced diamonds being ignored because I didnt want to tackle the next step! And I love the setting the one in the museum uses, so that gives me further inspiration to get off my butt!
Sew happy to see one of these get finished! I wondered how big they were going to be. Looking forward to seeing more of them - maybe I'll get motivated and give it a whirl!
that star is great ! thanks for the inspiration link. I was at the Mingei about 4 years ago and it was my favorite spot in Balboa Park - I hope to go back
I like your thinking on the subject of avoiding setting in squares!! Look at those two cuddling up together like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths!!
